      SPARK Cowork, a space built for and by Holyoke residents has opened in downtown. The coworking space is the culmination of a years-long effort by Executive Director Tessa Murphy-Romboletti. It began with a need for space for an accelerator program to help aspiring entrepreneurs. Then came the funding. MassDevelopment provided $64,000 in funding, with the requirement that the grant be matched. Through a culmination of partners, the funding was raised and the search for space was next.

      Michael J. Kittredge II, founder of Yankee Candle, dies at 67

      Michael J. “Mike” Kittredge II, the founder of the Yankee Candle Company, passed away Wednesday. He was 67 years old. Kittredge began making candles 50 years ago in the garage of his childhood home in South Hadley, making his first candle out of melted crayons as a gift for his mother. The candle company grew to become one of the largest employers in Western Massachusetts, with about 1,400 employees in the region, including at the offices and flagship store in South Deerfield, the Whately factory and a facility in East Longmeadow.

      As state Sen. Jo Comerford campaigned to represent Hampshire, Franklin and Worcester in the Massachusetts legislature last year, the issue of transportation connecting the state kept arising among voters. Residents in Central and Western Massachusetts spoke of an easier way to get to and from Boston. “It’s within people’s lifetimes that we had passenger service,” Comerford, a Northampton Democrat, told MassLive of the former rail service along the Route 2 corridor. The previous passenger service ran from 1875 to 1968, connecting Eastern and Western Massachusetts.
