      Media General Inc., owners of 22 News and The CW Springfield, may drop its offer to acquire Meredith Corp., which operates rival Western Mass News stations abc40, FOX6 and CBS3 Springfield, when its board of directors meets on Friday. Media General of Richmond, Virginia, announced on Sept. 8 that it had reached an agreement to acquire Meredith for $2.4 billion, pending FCC approval and the sale of some TV stations, including one in the Greater Springfield market.

Nexstar Broadcasting Group is bidding $4.1 billion for Media General, which owns WWLP's 22 News and The CW Springfield.       TV merger would result in sale of WWLP, 22 News

      Media General Inc., owner of WWLP's 22 News and The CW Springfield, announced  on Tuesday it has agreed to buy Meredith Corp., owners of WGGB's abc 40, CBS 3 Springfield and FOX 6, for about $2.4 billion in cash and stock. The deal is expected to close by June 30, 2016, following approval from shareholders and regulators. The combined company, Meredith Media General, has said it plans to swap or divest of stations in Springfield, Hartford-New Haven, and several other markets to comply with Federal Communications Commission regulations.

      The sale of WGGB, ABC40 and FOX6, to the owners of WSHM, CBS3 Springfield, is awaiting final approval by the Federal Communications Commission. Gormally Broadcasting LLC of Springfield plans to sell WGGB to Meredith Corp. of Des Moines, Iowa, for $53.8 million. Gormally purchased the station from Sinclair Broadcast Group in 2007 for $21.2 million. The 30-day public comment period recently ended and the acquisition is before the FCC for final approval.
