      The sports shoe was chosen because Springfield is proud of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and its Enshrinement Week, a week of activities beginning Aug. 7 with a tournament to benefit the Special Olympics and culminating with induction ceremonies on Aug. 14, said Gina E. Beavers, director of the Springfield Arts Initiative.

      Western New England College hosts elite high school students in biomedical engineering program
      The students, who hail from 16 states, were chosen from among about 50 applicants to participate in the first year of the college’s Biomedical Engineering Summer Program for Elite High School Students. The week-long program, which ends Saturday, was created by professor Judy L. Cezeaux.
