John D. Judge, the city’s chief development officer, talked about creating the Larry O’Brien Sports Institute, which would be named for the Hall of Famer and late Springfield resident who was U.S. postmaster general and NBA commissioner. Judge said such a facility would include a place where there would be camps and clinics and sports medicine would be practiced.

“I’m hopeful...and optimistic that we’ll have the FTA direct designation by the first week of May,” said John D. Judge, the city’s chief development officer.
Judge said he is hopeful the project will be completed in a little more than three years.
“The main thing is, this needs to move forward from a regional perspective,” he said.
