      Springfield to receive Shannon grant of nearly $782,000 to combat youth, gang violence

      The city’s Shannon grant for fiscal year 2014, used to combat youth and gang violence, is up 10 percent from this year and tallies to nearly $782,000 officials said.  Funding from the grant, formally known as the Sen. Charles F. Shannon Community Safety Initiative, is primarily used for gang task force personnel and overtime, crime analysis and social intervention programs.

      State Sen Michael R. Knapik, R-Westfield, is stepping down after more than 20 years of service to take a new position with Westfield State University. Knapik, a 10-term Republican senator and member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, is resigning to become executive director of university advancement. The position will require him to work closely with university President Evan S. Dobelle and the Westfield State Foundation Inc., the nonprofit organization that raises money and manages charitable gifts for the university.

      “(Duffy) has always risen to the occasion on the Springfield Fire Department and we are very excited to introduce it today,” said Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant.

      Duffy declined to elaborate on how much money he may earn from his invention. “It’s not about money for me, it’s about helping to save the lives of people who save lives for a living,” he said.

Claudio and the New North Citizens’ Council, Inc. in spearheading the effort to fund the expansion. “This is part of our continued attack to get guns, gangs and drugs off the streets,” Sarno said. Claudio, community development and relations director for the council., thanked the organizations and businesses that have committed to fund the $120,000 annual cost of the system for three years. He said the outpouring is part of resurgence of community spirit in the North End.

      The junction of Boston Road and Parker Street has earned the dubious distinction of being a perfect storm of frequent crashes with a high likelihood of injuries and property damage, according to a recently released report on the Pioneer Valley's most crash-prone intersections. That intersection logged 83 crashes between 2007 and 2009, according to a draft report issued by the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission on the area's top 100 high-crash intersections. Chicopee, meanwhile, claims the next two spots on the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission list.
