    Picknelly family dealings mean big business for Springfield and Western

    A larger-than-life figure in Springfield, Peter L. Picknelly seemed to know all the right buttons to push. In 1993, he bought Monarch Place, which was built six years earlier for $110 million, for the bargain basement price of $24 million at auction. He celebrated the acquisition by inviting 600 of his closest friends to a gala hosted by Robin Leach, of “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous” fame. Picknelly also parked his fleet of Rolls Royces in the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel at Monarch Place.
