    MassMutual executives had already decided to vacate and sell their Connecticut campus before they received a $46 million incentive package from the state of Massachusetts to consolidate in Springfield. Executives at the insurance giant also told this state's top economic development official that the 1,500 jobs just south of the border in Enfield -- and their $100,000-a-year salaries -- could have gone to North Carolina or Tennessee instead. Massachusetts officials spent months convincing MassMutual to keep those jobs in Greater Springfield and to expand in Massachusetts, according to documents obtained by The Republican through a public records request.
