DevelopSpringfield received a 2017 Massachusetts Historical Commission Historic Preservation Award for its work preserving and rebuilding the Merrick-Phelps House. The award was announced by Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin at a ceremony on Nov. 2. Galvin serves as chairman of the commission, which administers state and federal historic preservation programs. The Merrick-Phelps House at 83 Maple St. dates to 1841. It was built by Solymon Merrick, inventor of the monkey wrench.
