Holyoke's oldest manufacturer sells off equipment at auction; 'I want to see where my machine goes, so I can go along with it,' former worker says
Alan Bernier of South Hadley ran a sophisticated grinding machine at Holyoke Machine Co. for 33 years before the company, the oldest manufacturer in the city, closed in February. On Thursday he joined a crowd of hundreds at the company's liquidation auction. "I want to see where my machine goes so I can go along with it," he said. "I don't have a job now." Owner James Sagalyn said Holyoke Machine had simply outlived its usefulness. The paper mills and textile plants it was built to serve are either gone or are few and far between.
