    Professor Lionel Kimmerling, representing the AIM Photonics Institute and the MIT Microphotonics Center, said MIT was working with community colleges, industry and state government to help create a skilled workforce for Massachusetts manufacturers. "We're here because Springfield community college is a traditional source of optics technology for the technician-level worker," Kimmerling said. "In order for manufacturing to be supreme in Massachusetts, we need about 50,000 more technical level employees in this industry." Lesser, a proponent of advanced manufacturing projects in Western Mass., praised STCC's program as a boon to job growth and economic development.
