    Holyoke planners seek traffic study for Holyoke Medical Center $12 million emergency room project

    The Planning Board after a 90-minute public hearing Tuesday (Aug. 25) told Holyoke Medical Center to return Sept. 8 with a traffic study and other details related to a plan for a $12 million emergency room. The hospital at 575 Beech St. needs a new emergency department because the existing one was built to handle 18,000 visits a year and has been drawing more than 45,000, officials said. "The existing emergency room is untenable," said Spiros Hatiras, hospital president and chief executive officer.
