MassDOT announces elimination of existing MassPike toll rate structure, offers savings for Western and Central Mass. drivers

As Massachusetts Department of Transportation officials prepare to embrace all-electronic tolling in 2016, state transportation officials announced Wednesday a new toll structure that will save some drivers in Western and Central Massachusetts money. With the new, all-electronic tolling system, drivers will no longer pay by E-ZPass transponder or cash as they exit, but rather while they drive. Tolls will be collected electronically either through a motorist’s E-ZPass or via a program in which a camera captures the license plate and the vehicle’s registered owner is billed by mail.
