Gov. Deval Patrick, retired U.S. Rep. John Olver and officials from the city and from the the state Department of Transportation marked the ceremonial groundbreaking for Phase II of the Holyoke Canal Walk on Monday with a stroll along Race Street.
The $3.5 million project is expected to last two years, according to contractor ET & L Corp of Stow. Race Street, once the site of mills that made Holyoke an industrial power, is now home to arts business, galleries and performance spaces like Paper City Studios Gateway City Arts and the Parsons Hall Project Space.
