    Belchertown seeks portion of $10 million in state funds for Belchertown State School cleanup

    The state has set aside $10 million to clean up the contaminated former Belchertown State School property, and selectmen unanimously voted on Monday for the first time to formally asked them for a big chunk of it. A dollar figure was not included in the written request, but town officials say $6 million is required to properly eradicate the pollution. It has plagued efforts to develop the former state hospital that was shuttered a generation ago. The state school land is officially owned by Belchertown Economic Development Industrial Corporation that consists of board members who were appointed by selectmen.
