    Gov. Deval Patrick announces $1 million in job training grants for homeless

    The $250,000 Western Massachusetts grant will go to HAP Housing, a Springfield-based non-profit that works with other local partners to help people obtain affordable housing. Shannon Porter, vice president of rapid re-housing for HAP Housing, said the organization tries to move people who are living in motels or shelters into permanent homes and refers them to programs that provide the skills they need to maintain their housing. "Obviously, you need to maximize their income, so employment is essential and key to making sure families are able to keep their housing," Porter said.
