    James Naismith was a 30-year-old instructor at what is now known as Springfield College when he came up with 13 rules for an indoor winter game. The year was 1891 – and peach baskets were the forerunners of the nets used in the game today. Naismith died in 1939, three years after he watched his game introduced at the Olympics.
