    All electronic tolling system on Massachusetts Turnpike unpopular with residents at public hearing in Springfield

    The administration of Gov. Deval L. Patrick is moving forward on a $250 million plan to demolish toll plazas, eliminate the positions of toll collectors and install all-electronic tolling on the Massachusetts Turnpike by 2017.  Thomas Walling of Wilbraham said the Massachusetts Turnpike was built in the early 1960s and residents were told the tolls it would be paid off by 1982.  “It’s been paid off twice,” Walling said. “We don’t need these devices.”  Other residents said they are concerned the electronic tolling system would be used to charge drivers with speeding.
