1. Boston Business Journal - Sequester prompts growth in biotech’s ‘academic-industrial complex’

    At UMass Amherst, for instance, the college recently created the UMass Innovation Institute, the whole goal of which is to work with local companies to help fund research in a wide variety of technologies. While the institute’s executive director, Jim Capistran, says biotechs only make up a small part of the partnerships now, if the institute is successful, it will spread throughout the rest of the UMass campuses. That would encompass UMass Medical School in Worcester, Mass., where most of the state university’s biotech research is done.
