The EDC congratulates the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on its recent announcement that the Tip-Off Classic, formerly Springfield's signature event, will open the NCAA basketball season in November. Many of our Directors and staff played significant roles in the Tip-Off's 25-year history and most of our member companies were staunch supporters of the event. We are enthused that the event will become an eight-team weekend tournament with an NCAA exemption, assuring a major impact on our hospitality industry. We wish the University of Massachusetts, and especially Coach Derek Kellogg, good luck in Coach Kellogg's return to his hometown. As Springfield Republican sportswriter Garry Brown would say, "You're getting old if you saw Derek Kellogg hold Corey Beck scoreless in the 1994 Tip-Off Classic".
