    1. Health care, job engine for state, is pulling back

      Over the long term, analysts say, the demand for health services and workers is almost certain to grow as aging baby boomers leave the workforce and need more care. For example, Baystate Health of Springfield, which employs more than 10,000 across its Western Massachusetts system, estimates it will need to hire about 15,000 people over the next 10 years to replace retiring workers and meet increased demand, said Jean Jackson, Baystate’s vice president of workforce planning.

      Connecticut-based Colvest Group, which bought the 327 King St. property some three years ago, this week applied for a special permit to build a 4,400-square-foot structure using part of the parking lot close to King Street. The structure would house either a bank or restaurant, although a specific tenant is not named, according to plans filed with the Office of Planning and Development.

    5. Two New Projects Announced

      Congratulations are in order for officials who helped facilitate two announcements about business expansions in western Massachusetts this week. First, Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Greg Bialecki and Northampton Mayor Mary Claire Higgins put together a package of incentives to convince Coca Cola to expand its Northampton facility. The project represents a minimum investment of $33 Million according to Coke and will add at least 40 new permanent jobs and about 60 construction jobs.
