    2. UMass shares $750K for antimicrobial compounds

      In July 2009, UMass and Polymedix won $975,000 from the National Institutes of Health to develop antibiotics to be used against food-borne illnesses. The two also split a Navy grant that same month to study the best antimicrobial compounds for military uses. The Office of Naval Research awarded UMass and PolyMedix that $99,000 Phase 1 Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract.

      In a letter to students and others on campus, Chancellor Robert C. Holub said he expects a cut of $18 million for the fiscal year that starts July 1, 2011. That’s about 8 percent less than the $215 million the campus has received in the current fiscal year.

That company also employs a large number of Western Massachusetts residents.
